Chelmsford City FC have added to their defense with the signing of English-born Ghanaian defender Paul Appiah in the Summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old joins the Clarets following his departure from Leicester City in the summer. As a youngster Paul started out with Chelsea before he headed to the midlands and joined Aston Villa.
With Villa Paul was part of the FA Youth Cup winning side, as they beat Liverpool 2-1 to win the 2021 FA Youth Cup.
He joined Leicester in summer 2022, where he had a loan spell at fellow National League South side Maidstone United, who are the Clarets’ opponents tonight.
Manager Robbie Simpson said: “Paul really impressed us last year in his spell at Maidstone when he went there and when he was in the team they were a really hard side to score against so we have kept tabs on him ever since.
He performed heroically against Ipswich in the FA Cup and indeed when we played them at their place he was a really strong defender and tough to get past.
In every aspect, physically and athletically he is a real top player and we are delighted to get him with us and strengthen our back line, particularly with our injuries to Geof and Cameron, Paul is definitely someone that will improve us back there.
Appiah has been training with the PFA team during pre-season and is eager to hit the ground running. Despite a break from competitive matches, Simpson believes Appiah is well-prepared to make an immediate impact for the Clarets.
