Premier League giants Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign England international of Ghanaian descent Kobbie Mainoo as the January transfer window draws closer.
The highly-rated midfielder has found first-team opportunities limited at Manchester United this season and is now pushing for a move away from Old Trafford, with numerous top European clubs monitoring his situation closely.
Reports indicate that as many as 12 elite clubs across Europe are interested in securing Mainoo’s services, but Chelsea have so far emerged as the frontrunners in the chase for the young midfielder.
Despite Chelsea’s strong interest, Napoli remain Mainoo’s preferred destination. The midfielder is keen on a move that guarantees regular playing time, drawing inspiration from Scott McTominay, who revitalised his career after joining the Italian side and establishing himself as a key starter.
Mainoo is determined to play consistently to enhance his chances of earning a place in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The midfielder believes a fresh challenge would accelerate his development and keep him in contention at international level.
The English-Ghanaian has yet to start a Premier League match for Manchester United this season, a situation that has further fuelled his desire to seek an exit during the winter window.
Although United blocked his departure in the summer, head coach Rúben Amorim has used Mainoo sparingly in the current campaign, casting doubt over his long-term future at the club and potentially impacting his World Cup ambitions.
So far this season, Mainoo has managed just 171 minutes in the Premier League, alongside a full 90-minute appearance in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town, underlining his frustration over limited opportunities.
