Chelsea lead race for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo amid contract stalemate

Chelsea are reportedly in pole position to sign Manchester United’s highly-rated midfielder Kobbie Mainoo if contract talks with the 19-year-old continue to stall.

Mainoo, whose current deal runs until June 2027, has been negotiating improved terms to reflect his role as a first-team regular and England international. However, discussions have hit a standstill, attracting interest from top clubs across Europe.

According to Mail Sport, Chelsea are ready to move swiftly should Mainoo become available, though they are expected to face competition from other Premier League sides and major European teams.

Despite this, Manchester United remain optimistic about reaching a compromise to keep the academy graduate, seen as a cornerstone of their future plans.

The standoff comes amid financial constraints at United, who are looking to slash their wage bill by offloading high earners like Casemiro (£375,000-a-week), Marcus Rashford (£315,000-a-week), and Antony (£200,000-a-week) in the January transfer window. These challenges have hindered Mainoo’s contract negotiations, with the young midfielder aware that better financial offers may be available elsewhere.

In addition to financial concerns, Mainoo is reportedly uneasy about United’s current form. The Red Devils sit 13th in the Premier League under manager Ruben Amorim, raising questions about their ability to secure Champions League qualification.

Mainoo has showcased his potential despite United’s struggles, with standout performances against Liverpool and Manchester City. Widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest young talents, the Stockport-born midfielder is a testament to United’s famed academy system.

However, United’s need to comply with profit and sustainability regulations, which place a premium on homegrown talent, has complicated the situation.

Mainoo has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season but is yet to score his first senior goal. If United fail to resolve the impasse, losing Mainoo would be a major blow to their long-term vision.
