Chelsea & Tottenham tracking Serge Gnabry after Bayern contract extension talks stall

Chelsea and Tottenham are keeping a close eye on the stuttering contract talks between Bayern Munich and winger Serge Gnabry.

Bayern have been working to tie Gnabry, whose current deal expires in 2023, down to a new contract for the best part of a year now, and talks were thought to be close to a positive resolution earlier this season.

Gnabry is looking to become one of the club’s top earners and believes he deserves that kind of money because he is Bayern’s top scorer outside of Robert Lewandowski, while he is also one of the team’s top assist providers.

However, Sport Bild now state that things have hit a real stumbling block. A meeting in February ended in disappointment and those in charge at Bayern are growing concerned that they are not going to be able to come to an agreement.

Bayern are reluctant to throw out that kind of money, just as they were to centre-backs David Alaba last year and Niklas Sule earlier in 2022, and that has left Gnabry fearing that an extension will not be a possibility.

In the Premier League, both Chelsea and Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing Gnabry, who has also stressed just how much he likes the city of London.

However, Gnabry does not want to actually be sold by Bayern and has no plans to leave the club at the end of the season, but he is prepared to walk away for free in 2023 if a new contract cannot be thrashed out.

Bayern hope to do all they can to avoid losing Gnabry, who they accept is an elite winger with huge value, and they do not want to lose another player for little or no money following stuttering contract talks.

Thiago was sold to Liverpool in 2020 after running his contract down before Alaba left on a free 12 months later and Sule set up a switch to Borussia Dortmund later in the summer.

As it stands, Bayern believe they will eventually convince Gnabry to sign an extension, but Chelsea and Tottenham are positioning themselves if things continue to stutter Sport Bild and 90min reports.
