Ghana head coach, Chris Hughton, has defended his choice to include Andre Ayew in the Black Stars squad for the initial round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Despite the veteran currently being without a club, Hughton emphasized Ayew’s ongoing value as an excellent player and a crucial figure for the national team.

Speaking to BBC, Hughton explained, “Dede Ayew is still a very good player and still somebody that can be the best player in training.”

He highlighted Ayew’s significance beyond playing ability, citing his leadership as captain and positive influence on younger players.

“He is somebody that has an added importance because he is captain – he is a very good influence to the younger players that are in the squad. And so it’s not just about his playing ability, it’s for what he means to the squad.”

The Black Stars face Madagascar on November 17 and Comoros in the second game of the World Cup qualifiers, amid pressure on Hughton to secure positive results.
