Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Ghana national team, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s draw against Angola.
During Monday’s clash, the coach made some crucial substitutions in the second half and led his Black Stars to secure a crucial point.
In his post-match interview, Hughton emphasized the strong team spirit within the Ghana national team. He acknowledged Angola’s technical abilities in the attacking areas, and therefore, defensive solidity was crucial.
Hughton also highlighted the importance of exploiting spaces and attacking quickly against such a team.
Hughton believed that Ghana gained momentum after conceding a penalty, which helped them to get back into the game. He also mentioned that Angola dropped deeper after their goal, which Ghana took advantage of.
The coach attributed the team’s success to their spirit and the ability to score late goals in both games.
“Angola has some very good technical players, especially in the attacking areas. So we knew that defensively we will have to be good and we would have to be solid. Because they are such a good expansive technical team we wanted to use the spaces and attack fast.
“I thought once they scored the penalty it gave us a lift, inspiration to get back into the game, and it’s normal that Angola dropped maybe a little bit deeper. I think we proved we have big spirit in the team and in both games scoring late goals,” Coach Chris Hughton told the media.
With the draw on Monday, Ghana remains at the top of Group E in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Coach Hughton has had an impressive start to his new job, having won one and drawn the other game.
