President Akufo Addo emphasized that the winner of the Ghana Premier League must have representation from their players in the senior national team, the Black Stars.
His statement followed a courtesy visit by Medeama SC to the Jubilee House on July 2, during which they officially presented their Ghana Premier League trophy to President Akufo Addo.
Expressing his concern, Akufo Addo questioned why the Premier League-winning team’s players are not part of the senior national team, the Black Stars, and urged the handlers of the national team to consider including players from the victorious Ghana Premier League team.
“People who win the League should have some people in the Black Stars,” he said.
Additionally, President Akufo Addo offered GHC1 million to Medeama SC to support their Africa campaign. The Tarkwa-based club will be representing Ghana in the CAF Champions League following their triumph in the Premier League.
Medeama SC is scheduled to face Nigerian side Remo Stars in the preliminary round of games later this month. The first leg will be hosted at the Cape Coast Stadium on August 20, with the return leg taking place in Abuja.
As for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final round of qualifiers against the Central African Republic (CAR) in September, it remains uncertain whether Coach Chris Hughton will include local players in his squad.
