Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, has announced that the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will undergo extensive renovation in the near future.
The minister revealed this after visiting and inspecting the facility on Thursday, May 11, 2023.
The purpose of the visit was to assess the major challenges facing the stadium and determine the necessary measures for its revitalization.
After spending over 30 minutes touring various parts of the stadium, the minister acknowledged the urgent need for a significant renovation.
“The regional director has informed me that this facility requires renovation within the next 10 years. Hence, the purpose of this inspection is to identify the challenges faced by this facility and take steps to renovate it,” he stated as quoted by Footballmadeinghana.com.
The minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Yagaba-Kubori, mentioned that renovation works have already begun across Ghana, with Accra and Kumasi receiving notable improvements.

“We have started with the Accra Sports Stadium, completing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd phases. We have also begun the 1st phase of renovation at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, with the contractor preparing for the 2nd phase. Essipong is currently undergoing renovation as well,” he explained.
He further emphasized the importance of giving the Aliu Mahama Stadium a major facelift, stating, “There is a necessity for us to undertake a significant renovation here at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.”
The Aliu Mahama Stadium was initially constructed in 2008 as one of the host venues for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ghana.
