Former Asante Kotoko striker Abdul Fatawu Safiu is edging closer to a return to the Ghana Premier League after newly promoted Debibi United opened talks to sign the experienced forward.
The 32-year-old attacker trained with Debibi United on Tuesday as discussions over personal terms continue, with both parties working towards reaching an agreement ahead of the club’s historic maiden Ghana Premier League campaign.
If completed, Safiu’s arrival would represent a major statement signing for Debibi United as they prepare to compete among Ghana’s elite clubs for the first time.
The striker is looking to restart his career after a frustrating setback earlier this year. Safiu was close to rejoining Asante Kotoko, but the deal collapsed after medical examinations revealed a serious knee ligament injury, preventing him from making a competitive appearance for the Porcupine Warriors.
After undergoing successful surgery and completing his rehabilitation programme, the former Ghana international has returned to full fitness and is ready for a new challenge.
Safiu remains one of the most accomplished forwards of the modern Ghana Premier League era. He won the 2019 NC Special Competition Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals and was later named Home-Based Player of the Year at the 2019 Ghana Football Awards.
During his first spell with Asante Kotoko, the clinical striker enjoyed a remarkable scoring run, netting 13 goals in just 16 appearances and establishing himself as one of the most feared finishers in domestic football.
