The Democratic Republic of Congo has officially announced its 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a historic return to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 1974 when the country competed as Zaire.

The squad, led by head coach Sébastien Desabre, features a strong blend of experienced internationals and Europe-based talents as the Leopards prepare for their debut appearance in the modern World Cup era.

PREMIER LEAGUE STARS HEADLINE THE SQUAD

Several well-known names from English football dominate the selection, underlining DR Congo’s growing influence on the global stage.

Defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka of has been included, bringing defensive stability and top-level Premier League experience.

Forward Yoane Wissa of is also named, expected to provide pace, creativity, and attacking threat in the final third.

In midfield, Edo Kayembe of adds energy and control, while Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki represents the younger generation breaking through at international level.

CAPTAIN AND KEY LEADERS

Veteran defender Chancel Mbemba leads the team as captain, providing leadership and experience at the heart of defence. His presence is expected to anchor the squad in high-pressure matches.

At the other end, Cedric Bakambu remains one of the team’s most important attacking outlets, bringing experience and goal-scoring instinct as DR Congo aim to make an impact in their return to the tournament.

BALANCED SQUAD WITH EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE

The squad features players from across Europe, including France, Belgium, Spain, Greece, and Poland, reflecting the growing diaspora influence in Congolese football.

Midfield creativity will be supported by players such as Théo Bongonda and Charles Pickel, while the defensive line includes experienced options like Arthur Masuaku and Dylan Batubinsika.

HISTORIC RETURN TO THE WORLD CUP STAGE

DR Congo qualified through the inter-confederation play-offs after a strong campaign, overcoming several strong opponents to secure their place in Group K.

They will face a challenging group-stage schedule against Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan as they prepare for their first World Cup appearance in decades.

OUTLOOK

With a squad combining Premier League experience, European pedigree, and emerging young talent, DR Congo enter the tournament as one of Africa’s most intriguing teams.

While expectations remain cautious, the blend of leadership, pace, and attacking quality gives the Leopards genuine hope of making a strong impression on their return to the world stage.
