Togo’s football icon, Emmanuel Adebayor, has expressed strong criticism towards the Black Stars in the wake of their lackluster performance against Mozambique during the 2023 AFCON.
Adebayor didn’t mince his words, asserting that the team’s underwhelming display did not merit qualification for the knockout stage, following their disappointing outing.
The Black Stars concluded the group phase without a victory, as a late collapse allowed Mozambique to secure a 2-2 draw at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium. Jordan Ayew’s well-taken penalties had initially put Ghana in control, but a late surge from the Mambas turned the tables.
In the 91st minute, Geny Catamo converted a penalty after Andre Ayew’s handball, narrowing the score. Three minutes later, Reinildo Mandava’s header from a corner delivered the final blow, shattering Ghana’s hopes.
Adebayor joined the chorus of critics, asserting that Ghana lacked motivation and labeling their performance as unbelievable.
Expressing his disappointment, the former Arsenal and Manchester City striker stated, “They played with no motivation, they played with no communication, they played like they’re just here for fun and for me it’s completely wrong.”
Adebayor even suggested that the team should return to Ghana, questioning their capability to progress even if they were to qualify.
As the dust settles, Ghana faces the imminent threat of elimination from the 2023 AFCON, with just two points in Group B. Their prospects of advancing to the round of 16 now hang by a thread, painting a grim picture for the Black Stars in the tournament.
