English-Ghanaian midfielder Michael Adu-Poku found the back of the net as Newport County came from behind to defeat Walsall 3-1 and secure their place in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Adu-Poku played a pivotal role in Newport’s impressive comeback, scoring the goal that put the hosts in front after they had fallen behind early in the contest at Rodney Parade.
Walsall made a dream start, taking the lead in just the seventh minute. Andrew Dallas reacted quickest inside the penalty area to convert from close range after Aaron Pressley’s initial header had fallen kindly into his path.
Newport responded positively and restored parity in the 19th minute when striker Kion Etete fired home after being picked out by Ciaran Brennan.
Just four minutes later, the hosts completed the turnaround through Adu-Poku. The midfielder showed great determination after seeing his initial effort blocked by Lewis Simper, reacting quickest to the rebound before calmly finishing to hand Newport a 2-1 advantage.
The home side continued to control proceedings after the interval, limiting Walsall’s attacking threat while searching for a third goal to put the tie beyond doubt.
Etete wrapped up the victory in the 60th minute after capitalising on his own rebound. The striker’s first effort struck the post before he reacted sharply to slot home his second goal of the afternoon.
Adu-Poku was substituted in the 56th minute after delivering an influential display in midfield and helping Newport seize control of the match.
The victory sends Newport County into the second round of the Emirates FA Cup for the second consecutive season, with Adu-Poku’s goalscoring contribution highlighting his growing importance to the team’s impressive cup run.
