Former Asante Kotoko player, Ernest Boateng, has voiced his discontent with the current player pool, attributing the team’s lackluster performance to a perceived decline in the quality of players donning the iconic jersey.
Boateng, reminiscing about his own journey through the ranks, emphasized the rigorous standards that once defined earning a spot in the senior team.
Expressing concern about the changing dynamics, Boateng lamented, “Asante Kotoko has become so cheap that players below par are able to play for the club. The current players are not Kotoko materials.” He highlighted his own path of progressing from the youth team to the senior squad, contrasting it with what he perceives as a more lenient system today.
Citing the rapid ascent of players without prior experience at the division level, Boateng questioned the sustainability of such a recruitment strategy, stating, “Player will shine today, tomorrow he’s signed by Kotoko, and I don’t think that will help the club.”
As Asante Kotoko prepares for a crucial clash against Medeama in the Ghana Premier League matchday 11, the spotlight intensifies on the team’s struggle to regain its former glory and rise in the league standings.
Boateng’s candid assessment adds a layer of introspection for fans and management alike as they seek to address the challenges faced by the revered club.
