Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has expressed his belief in Chris Hughton’s competence as head coach to lead the Black Stars.
Afriyie commended Hughton’s experience and technical expertise, citing his prior management of Newcastle United, and asserted that he is the right man for the job.
After Otto Addo’s departure following the team’s early elimination from the 2022 World Cup, Hughton was appointed as his successor. Although he has yet to manage a match, having recently named a 25-man squad for Ghana’s upcoming Afcon qualifiers against Angola, Afriyie remains hopeful about the coach’s potential and foretold his triumph.
Afriyie stated, “We have a coach who has managed in one of the top leagues [the English Premier League] in the world, coming to our country as the national team coach. If he can’t succeed, trust me, no one can. Personally, I have full confidence in Chris.
“Coaches can come and fail, but that’s normal. Let’s do our part in selecting the right people, so that even when they fail, we can still justify it. I have faith in Chris and his assistants [George Boateng and Didi Dramani]. I am proud they are managing the Black Stars, and I am confident they will deliver,” said Afriyie on 3fm’s Sports Ultras.
Prior to his appointment, Chris Hughton served as a technical advisor from March 2022. He will be at the helm for the Black Stars when they face Angola on March 23.
