Former Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien has achieved a new milestone in his post-playing career, earning a UEFA certificate in football management.
This accomplishment marks an important step for Essien, who has been steadily building his coaching credentials since retiring from a decorated career with top clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.
Essien completed the intensive UEFA program, which included several months of online modules and three in-person sessions. The former powerhouse midfielder shared his excitement on social media, stating, “Finally done with my UEFA certificate in football management journey. Thanks all for the help. I keep learning about the beautiful game. #UEFACFM.”
Currently, Essien is applying his skills as an individual talent coach for Danish Superliga club FC Nordsjaelland, where he brings his experience and tactical insight to developing young talent.
Essien’s rise in European football began with Bastia in France before he moved to Olympique Lyonnais, drawing the attention of English giants Chelsea. At Chelsea, he became one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders, securing multiple league titles and a Champions League trophy. His career later took him to Real Madrid and AC Milan, where he continued to build his legacy as one of the sport’s most admired midfield talents.
