Asante Kotoko are set to welcome Ethiopia international forward Abubeker Nassir for a one-week trial next week, Sportsworldghana.com can exclusively report.
The 24-year-old has recently parted ways with South African side Mamelodi Sundowns and is looking to make a fresh start with the Ghana Premier League record champions.
Nassir, known as the “Golden Boy of East African football”, has been invited for an assessment by Asante Kotoko’s technical team after he was recommended to the team.
The mercurial striker, who scored 29 goals in 22 matches in the 2021/22 Ethiopian Premier League before joining Sundowns, is eager to prove himself in Ghana’s top-flight football.
The Ethiopian forward had a promising start with Sundowns, scoring four goals in 18 appearances across all competitions. However, injuries limited his playing time, and he decided to cancel his contract and seek new opportunities.
Asante Kotoko are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season after going trophy-less in the just-ended season. They believe Nassir’s speed, skill, and goal-scoring ability could be the perfect fit for their attacking lineup.
Nassir could travel to Ghana this week and will be provided with accommodation before his one-week trial period begins. The player has previously represented Ethiopia in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals and has also played in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
If he impresses the Asante Kotoko coaches during the trial, he could become a key addition to the team for the upcoming season.
Nassir has featured 21 times for the Ethiopian national team, scoring five goals in the process.
