Gambia national team coach Tom Saintfiet has given reasons behind the Scorpions impressive maiden AFCON tournament.
The Belgian trainer hinted that his side is in great form because they played against most of the big teams in Africa last year in friendly games and that has lifted their spirit to compete with the best at the highest level.
“We have proving the last years that we are very competitive, we played lots of friendly games including Morocco, Guinea Conakry which we won all.” Saintfiet told Sportsworldghana.com
“We were in a top qualifying Group in the AFCON alongside Gabon as well as DR. Congo and we won it, it shows the potential we have. Last year we also played many strong respected African nations and we got good results which boosted our confidence which made us not to be afraid of any opponent.”
“I had no doubt of the quality of my team, we deserve to be in the quarter finals, we have three victories and one draw after four games, we have scored four goals and conceded one which was a penalty. It shows we are strong and have quality.”
Sainfiet further stressed that he is elated with his players performance as there are no shortfalls in his team.
“I am so proud and proud of my boys, I do not know what our limitations are. I know my boys can do a lot and that is the pleasure I have in working.” He added.
Gambia will face host nation Cameroon in the last eight of the competition on Saturday.
