Former Black Stars forward Richmond Boakye Yiadom has urged players returning from European football to remain mentally strong and focused, insisting that criticism from supporters is part of the game.
The experienced striker believes footballers must learn how to deal with pressure and continue performing regardless of what fans say, revealing that he faced similar situations even during his time competing at the highest level in Europe.
“Even when I played in the UEFA Champions League, fans said all sorts of things to us. Fans will always talk, but as a player, it’s up to you to stay focused and perform,” Boakye Yiadom told Andydotcom.
His comments come amid discussions about the challenges faced by Ghanaian players who return to the Ghana Premier League after successful spells abroad. Many are often expected to dominate immediately, with supporters demanding performances that match their reputation and experience.
Boakye Yiadom has first-hand experience of handling expectations throughout a career that took him across several top leagues. He began his professional journey with Ghanaian club Bechem United before moving to Europe.
The striker enjoyed a standout spell with Red Bull Salzburg, where he established himself as a prolific goalscorer, netting more than 40 goals across competitions and winning domestic honours.
He also played for clubs including Genoa CFC, FK Crvena zvezda, Roda JC Kerkrade and Elche CF.
During his time with Crvena zvezda, Boakye was particularly influential, scoring 39 goals in 48 appearances and helping the club achieve success in Serbia.
At international level, the forward earned 19 appearances for the Ghana Black Stars and scored 7 goals, representing the country at senior level after progressing through Ghana’s youth setup.
Boakye Yiadom’s message highlights the importance of mental strength for players who return home, especially those who have built reputations abroad and face increased scrutiny from passionate Ghanaian football supporters.
With his own ambition of featuring in the Ghana Premier League before retirement, the former Black Stars striker believes experience, focus and professionalism remain key to succeeding in Ghana football.
