FC Dallas has reinforced its defense by signing experienced Ghanaian center-back Lalas Abubakar on a two-year deal, with an additional one-year club option. The move highlights the club’s commitment to strengthening its squad ahead of the 2025 MLS season.
“We’re very happy to sign Lalas to our roster,” said FC Dallas Sporting Director André Zanotta. “Strengthening our defensive group this offseason was a priority. Lalas provides us with a great player, competitor, and flexibility along our backline. We look forward to him joining our group once the preseason begins.”
Abubakar brings significant MLS experience to Dallas. In 2024, he played a key role in the Colorado Rapids’ success, helping the team reach the MLS Cup playoffs and achieve a historic third-place finish in the League Cup. During his five seasons with the Rapids, he made 153 appearances, scored nine goals, and provided three assists. His outstanding performances earned him the Rapids’ Defensive Player of the Year award in both 2019 and 2020.
Before his time in Colorado, Abubakar played for Columbus Crew, where he featured in 35 matches and scored two goals. The Kumasi-born defender was selected fifth overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft and has also represented Ghana at the U-20 level.
Abubakar joins a Dallas defensive unit that includes Sebastien Ibeagha, Nkosi Tafari, and Marco Farfan. His addition brings experience and depth to the squad as Dallas now has 27 players under contract and prepares for an ambitious 2025 campaign.
