FC Samartex 1996 secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Medeama SC at the Nsenkyire Arena on Sunday, handing the defending champions their first defeat of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
The hosts claimed all three points in their Week Seven encounter through a stoppage-time winner, moving level on 14 points with Medeama and Hearts of Oak in the early race for the league title.
After a goalless first half, Samartex broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when Joshuah Fuseini found the back of the net to give the home side the advantage.
Medeama responded strongly and restored parity in the 79th minute through Dominic Amponsah, raising hopes of securing at least a point from the away fixture.
However, Samartex refused to settle for a draw. Christian Agyenim struck three minutes into injury time to snatch a dramatic winner and spark celebrations among the home supporters.
The result marked a significant setback for Medeama, whose unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end after seven matches.
Despite the defeat, the Tarkwa-based club remain at the top of the league standings with 14 points, retaining their position through a superior goal difference.
Samartex have also moved to 14 points, joining Medeama and Hearts of Oak in a closely contested battle at the summit of the table.
The victory represents an important statement of intent from Samartex, who have strengthened their position among the early contenders for the Premier League title.
With the season still in its early stages, the narrow gap between the leading teams sets the stage for an increasingly competitive title race.
