Ghanaian midfielder Umar Bashiru has been crowned the 2023/24 Ethiopian Premier League Player of the Year.
The Ethiopia Nigd Bank star claimed the prestigious award after an outstanding season, but was unable to attend the ceremony on Thursday as he is currently with his team in Tanzania for their CAF Champions League clash against Young Africans.
Bashiru beat strong competition from his teammate Fetuhdin Abdul Karim, Bahir Dar FC’s Chernet Gugsa, and Kenean Makenen of Defence Force FC. Other nominees included Shemeles Bekele (Defence Force FC), Ali Suleman (Hawasa City FC), and Biniam Woleyta (Dicha FC).
The former Asante Kotoko, WAFA, and Karela FC midfielder had a remarkable season, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 30 appearances.
Now in his second season with Ethiopia Nigd Bank, Bashiru’s performances have solidified his place as one of the league’s top talents.
