Former Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion Yaya Toure has shared his insights on the top contenders for the upcoming AFCON 2023, sparking discussions as he omits Ghana from his list of favorites.

The ex-Manchester City midfielder, who secured AFCON victory with Ivory Coast in 2015, expressed his bias toward his home country but also acknowledged the impressive form of other teams during the qualifiers.

“It’s normal to have a preference for your own country,” Toure admitted, underscoring the natural inclination to support Ivory Coast. He highlighted the strength of the Ivorian team, featuring talented and experienced players. However, when pressed to name his favorites, Toure pointed to Senegal, Morocco, Guinea-Bissau, and South Africa, citing their remarkable qualifying campaigns.

Despite the omission of Ghana from Yaya Toure’s list, the Black Stars, under the leadership of coach Chris Hughton, are determined to turn the tide after a disappointing performance in the 2021 AFCON. Drawn into a challenging group with Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, Ghana faces an uphill battle as they strive for redemption in the tournament set to kick off on January 13 in Ivory Coast.

Yaya Toure, with a career highlight of leading Ivory Coast to victory over Ghana in the 2015 AFCON final, where they secured their second title through a penalty shootout, brings a unique perspective to the discussion of favorites. His experience as a player and his intimate connection to the tournament add weight to his insights.

While opinions on AFCON favorites may vary, the anticipation for the tournament is building. Each participating team, including those omitted from Toure’s list, eyes the prestigious trophy in one of Africa’s most celebrated football competitions. As the event draws near, football enthusiasts across the continent eagerly await the unfolding drama, unpredictable outcomes, and the emergence of new heroes on the grand stage.

Ghana, with a storied football history, aims to overcome the challenges in their group and make a strong impact in AFCON 2023. The tournament not only serves as a battleground for supremacy but also as a platform for teams to showcase their talent and resilience, with the ultimate goal of lifting the coveted AFCON trophy and etching their names in African football history.

As the tournament approaches, debates on favorites and underdogs intensify, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. Yaya Toure’s perspective adds an intriguing layer to the discourse, demonstrating the complexity and unpredictability that characterize the beautiful game. The stage is set for AFCON 2023, promising a spectacle that will captivate football fans across the continent and beyond.
