Amir Abdou became so popular on the African continent the night he defeated Ghana 3-2 with lowly Comoros during the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

Tactically, he looked far more brilliant than Ghana’s head coach Milovan Rajevac, making the world of football notice his skills.

He signed for Mauritania and qualified the country for the 2023 AFCON. The best moment in Mauritanian football could be that 1-0 victory over Algeria in MD3 of Group D in Ivory Coast through Yali Dellahi’s 31st-minute strike. Mauritania progressed to the round 16 and lost 1-0 to Cape Verde.

Tiny Comoros and Mauritania’s rise in football was masterminded by the legendary Amir Abdou.

The Comorian has confirmed that he was approached by Ghana contrary to the news that Ghana had no interest in him.

“Did Ghana approach you?”, he was asked. “There were talks with Ghana, it’s true, but it didn’t go any further,” Amir Abdou said.

After the 2023 AFCON, Ghana sacked its head coach Chris Houghton and was in demand for a new one. Amir Abdou was contacted by the GFA for the hot vacant role but talks broke down between the two parties.

Amir Abdou is one of the best tacticians currently in the African game after punching above his weight with the Comoros and Mauritania national teams.
