Former board member of Hearts of Oak, Frank Nelson, has expressed confidence that the club still has a chance to secure the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title, despite their recent struggles.
The Phobians have been underperforming in the second half of the season, failing to win any of their last three games. As a result, they currently sit in 5th place on the league table with 37 points.
However, Nelson remains optimistic about their title hopes and urged the club’s leadership to show more support for head coach Aboubakar Ouattara.
“Where we are lying is not best for the club, picking up a point out of three games merely implies we are not serious about winning the league. However, based on the point difference, we can still compete,” Nelson said in an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM.
He also stressed the importance of supporting the coach to keep him motivated, noting that there are various forms of encouragement beyond just financial incentives. “I believe we should provide the coach with encouragement to keep him motivated. He has a lot of incentive in terms of income, but there are other things we call motivation, such as how the supporters surround him, how they support the players, how he sees the affection they have for the players, and so on,” Nelson added.
Despite the setbacks, Nelson remains hopeful, emphasizing that a 5-6 point difference is not insurmountable. “All hope is not lost. I feel that we can still win the league. It is not something we should give up hope for because 5-6 points difference is only 2 games if achievable. So I believe that Accra Hearts of Oak still has the possibility to win, but we need to work hard,” he concluded.
Hearts of Oak will return to action this afternoon, hosting Nations FC in an outstanding Matchday 21 fixture at the Tuba Astroturf.
