Fred calls Man Utd’s decision to hire an interim manager ‘strange’ & ‘bad’

Manchester United midfielder Fred has criticised the club’s decision to hire an interim manager rather than a permanent one to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian was relieved of his duties after a 4-1 defeat to Watford in November, and after Michael Carrick took caretaker charge, Ralf Rangnick was announced as interim boss until the end of the season.

But Fred was critical of United’s failure to implement a long-term plan following Solskjaer’s exit.

“It’s a bit strange,” Fred said to TNT Sports Brazil when asked about Rangnick’s appointment. “I know in football it’s important to get good results as soon as possible, but it’s also important to have a long-term plan.

“I think it’s a little bit bad for us not to have one. At the moment it’s all about the short-term goals. We don’t know how it’s going to be after the end of this season.”

In the short-term, Man Utd are looking to win their first trophy since 2017 when Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils lifted the Europa League.

United were defeated in last year’s Europa League final by Villarreal on penalties, and Fred insists there is a desire and hunger in the dressing room to end this drought.

“Every player that comes to this club wants to win titles,” he added. “It’s the same with me, Bruno [Fernandes], Alex [Telles], Cristiano [Ronaldo], [Jadon] Sancho, all of us. We want trophies, but it’s been a long drought.

“With all due respect to Villarreal, it was our job to win that Europa League final and we failed. It’s about having a better football planning at the club. If you don’t want to win titles, you don’t deserve to play for Manchester United.”
