Ghana captain Jordan Ayew is on the verge of signing for Sheffield United, according reports in the UK.
The 34-year-old forward reportedly joing Sheffield United later this week, after travelling to England to complete the formalities of the transfer.
Ayew has been without a club since the World Cup and is now closing in on a return to competitive football. He departed Leicester City before the tournament following the club’s relegation from the Championship.
A move to Blackburn Rovers is no longer happening, while Southampton are also not an option for the experienced forward.
There was contact with Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia, but discussions did not progress significantly as Ayew preferred to continue his career in one of Europe’s bigger leagues.
His decision to prioritise England has now led to a late move involving Sheffield United.
The transfer is expected to be confirmed after Ayew arrives in England and signs the necessary documents.
Ayew’s participation in Ghana’s upcoming international matches against Cote D’Ivore and The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers could also be affected as he looks to settle into his new club.
A decision on whether he will join the Black Stars is expected in the coming days and could depend on his new club’s position.
Ayew has been capped 122 times for Ghana and scored 33 goals. He captained the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World where his side exited the tournament at the round of 32 stage following a 1-0 loss against Cololmbia.
