England coach Gareth Southgate has heaped praise on midfielder Kobbie Mainoo for his standout performances in recent friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
The England-born Ghanaian midfielder made his debut as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Brazil last Saturday, catching the eye of Southgate, who rewarded him with his first start against Belgium on Tuesday in the 2-2 draw at Wembley.
At just 18 years old, Mainoo, who has been making significant strides at Manchester United, delivered a stellar performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
Southgate was effusive in his praise for Mainoo, highlighting his fearlessness and technical ability on the field.
“We saw there was that fearlessness to come in and the technical ability to receive, when pressed, to find a pass to manipulate the ball in tight areas. It gives us a profile of player we haven’t got. That’s hugely exciting,” remarked Southgate.
Mainoo will now aim to solidify his place in the England national team after an impressive debut in the international friendlies, with his performances raising hopes for a bright future in the Three Lions’ setup.
