George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has officially declared his candidacy for the position of GFA President.
On Sunday, June 25, 2023, Afriyie is set to unveil the details of his bid, as he embarks on a campaign centered around the theme “Empowering Progress: Beacon of Leadership and Transformation.” His aim is to bring about positive change within the organization and lead it into a new era.
This is not Afriyie’s first attempt at the presidency, as he previously contested in the 2019 elections. However, he narrowly missed out on victory, with Kurt Okraku ultimately emerging as the winner.
Undeterred by his previous setback, Afriyie, who is the owner and President of Planners Athletic Club based in Tafo, is resolute in his pursuit of the esteemed role of GFA President.
With Kurt Okraku’s mandate set to end in October 2023, it is expected that several football administrators will come forward to contest for the position of the next FA President. Afriyie joins Kojo Yankah as another contender for the role.
While the exact date for the GFA elections is yet to be announced, it is anticipated that the election modalities will be revealed soon.
Football administrators will convene at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on July 10, 2023, for the 29th Ordinary Congress of the association, where important discussions and decisions regarding the elections will take place.
