Former Ghana Football Association Vice President George Afriyie has downplayed reports linking him to the Chief Executive Officer role at Asante Kotoko, amid ongoing discussions about the club’s future administrative structure.
Speculation intensified in recent days suggesting that the experienced football administrator was among prominent names being considered for a top executive position at the Kumasi-based side ahead of the 2026/27 season. The reports fueled debate within local football circles, especially as Kotoko continue conversations around restructuring and long-term stability.
Responding to the rumours, Afriyie acknowledged Kotoko’s stature but firmly ruled himself out of contention for the role.
“No doubt, Asante Kotoko is a big club with a rich history, but at the moment, I am not in the race to become the new CEO of the club,” he stated, as quoted by Ghana Web.
He further clarified that while there may have been informal discussions in certain quarters, no official approach has been made to him regarding the position.
“Perhaps there have been conversations somewhere, but as it stands now, no one has spoken to me about becoming the Chief Executive Officer. I have friends there, but nothing has been discussed.”
The comments come at a crucial period for the Porcupine Warriors, who are reportedly planning to dissolve the interim management structure that has overseen the club’s affairs for the past two seasons.
With supporters keen on seeing experienced football administrators steer the club’s next phase, Afriyie’s clarification brings temporary closure to one of the many leadership rumours surrounding Asante Kotoko.
