Former Ghana Football Association Vice President, George Afriyie, has commended the addition of Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren to the Black Stars technical team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Björkegren, who currently coaches the Black Queens, is one of five new faces added to strengthen the backroom staff. He will serve as an assistant coach alongside Alain Ravera. Spanish tactician Jose Daniel Martinez Alfonso has been brought in to enhance scouting and match analysis, while Carlos Lozano Romero returns as physiotherapist after his work with the team at the 2022 World Cup. British-born Ghanaian performance coach Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi completes the revamped setup.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie emphasized that Björkegren’s experience with the Black Queens makes him well-qualified for the role. He also praised the Ghana Football Association for modernizing the team by expanding the technical staff to 20 members.
The Black Stars will regroup in March for international friendlies against Austria and Germany as part of preparations for the World Cup.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The team will kick off its tournament campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
