Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum has spoken about the exclusion of Medeama striker, Jonathan Sowah from Black Stars exclusion for friendly matches.
Striker Jonathan Sowah was invited for Ghana’s September games and made his debut in a friendly game against Liberia despite his exclusion from the AFCON qualifier against Central Africa Republic in Kumasi.
Despite his performance in the game against Liberia, Sowah was not invited for the upcoming games against US and Mexico while his club teammate, Hamidu Fatawu was handed a call up.
“In every call-up, when the coach forms his team, he places one or two players on standby. From the initial list that he submitted, Jonathan was on the list but on standby.”
He explained that the standby list allows for adjustments based on factors like injuries, saying, “Normally, they will wait for all the leagues to end during the weekend, and when there is an injury, then another player will be called up,” Henry AsanTwum explained.
He added that Hamidu Fatawu has been released from Black Friday camp to join Medeama SC who are in US for their friendly game against DC United.
“What happened is, as I speak to you, Medeama is on their way to Washington. As Ghanaian champions, they are going to play a game. Due to challenges they faced with visa acquisition, the club requested the FA to release Fatawu so they could use him for their friendly game, after which he will return to the Black Stars group.”
