The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced plans to implement a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League, a move aimed at improving player welfare and professionalism in the domestic game.
This initiative was approved by the Executive Council (EXCO) and will be presented to the GFA Congress ahead of the 2025/26 league season for final endorsement.
Speaking on Starr FM’s Starr Sports Digest, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the policy:
“The GFA will introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO,” he said.
The new structure will ensure that every top-flight player receives fair and consistent compensation, setting a financial baseline that all clubs must meet. This policy is part of broader reforms by the GFA to curb player exodus, raise league standards, and make the local game more competitive.
For years, Ghana’s top-tier clubs have struggled with poor player remuneration, leading to the steady migration of talented footballers to lower-tier foreign leagues in search of better opportunities. This new wage policy seeks to address that challenge.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could boost morale, retain talent, and attract new investors into the Ghana Premier League, laying the foundation for long-term growth and sustainability.
