Ghanaian center-back Kasim Adams scored his first goal of the season for Servette FC, but his effort was in vain as they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to FC Basel in Round 34 of the Swiss Super League on Sunday.
The clash, held at Basel’s home stadium, was lit up by an outstanding performance from Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri, formerly of Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Shaqiri opened the scoring in the 28th minute and went on to assist three more goals, playing a central role in Basel’s dominant display.
Albian Ajeti struck twice before the interval, putting the home side firmly in control and leaving Servette with a mountain to climb in the second half.
Adams briefly lifted Servette’s spirits when he found the net with a header in the 55th minute, cutting the deficit to 3-1. But any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Basel responded with two more goals—Benie Traore and Nicolas Vouilloz adding their names to the scoresheet to complete the rout.
Young Ghanaian talent Jonas Adetey also played a significant role for Basel, featuring for 85 minutes and helping his team maintain their grip on the match.
Adams, who signed with Servette on a free transfer, has now featured in 16 league matches this season. With his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, questions remain about his future with the club.
