Ghana has received a financial reward of $11 million (€11 million) from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Black Stars reached the knockout stage of the tournament.
The amount places Ghana among the 16 teams that progressed from the group stage but were eliminated in the Round of 32, earning the same prize money for their performances at football’s biggest global event.
The Black Stars produced a memorable campaign in North America, defying expectations to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 World Cup.
Ghana began the tournament with a crucial 1-0 victory over Panama, before securing a valuable goalless draw against England to strengthen their qualification hopes. Despite losing 2-1 to Croatia in their final Group L fixture, the Black Stars progressed as one of the best third-placed teams.
Their journey eventually ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal.
The financial reward represents a significant boost for Ghanaian football, with the prize money expected to support preparations for future national team competitions and football development programmes.
Other notable nations that received the same $11 million payout after exiting at the same stage included Germany, the Netherlands, Senegal, Croatia, Japan, Ivory Coast, Algeria and Australia.
The tournament was ultimately won by Spain, who defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final to secure their second FIFA World Cup title.
Ghana’s performance, however, was widely regarded as a positive step forward, with the Black Stars showcasing a young and promising squad capable of competing against some of the world’s best teams.
