Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo has revealed that Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil Van Dijk stands out as the most formidable opponent he has encountered throughout his career.
The AFC Bournemouth striker has faced numerous challenges in the English Premier League, squaring off against legendary figures like Brazil’s Thiago Silva and Manchester City’s Ruben Diaz. However, Semenyo admitted that Van Dijk’s presence on the pitch was particularly daunting for any forward.
“Van Dijk is the toughest defender I’ve faced,” Semenyo disclosed. “I remember chasing the ball and hearing his footsteps behind me, ‘DUM DUM DUM,’ it felt like he was right on my heels. Even when I attempted to shoot, his commanding presence unsettled me. It’s a tough challenge.”
Despite the formidable stature of the Dutchman, Semenyo managed to find the net against Liverpool during the recently concluded season. The former Bristol City attacker enjoyed a productive campaign, netting eight goals for the Cherries, contributing significantly to their impressive performance in the English Premier League.
Currently, Semenyo is with the Black Stars squad, gearing up for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic.
