Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Black Stars, has expressed the need for patience towards Otto Addo as he takes on the role of head coach once again. Addo’s return to the position was confirmed before the March international break, overseeing matches against Nigeria and Uganda, resulting in a 2-1 loss and a 2-2 draw respectively for the Black Stars.

Assuming leadership amidst challenging circumstances, Addo steps into a team grappling with a string of disappointments since their last triumph under Chris Hughton in September 2023. With two winless games under Addo’s belt, Ghana finds itself in a seven-game drought across all competitions.

Despite the current predicament, Gyan, who played alongside Otto Addo during the 2006 World Cup, maintains a hopeful outlook regarding his former teammate’s potential to shape the team given sufficient time.

“Otto Addo faces a different environment now, with a different set of players. While he’s familiar with some of them, it’s still a process,” Gyan shared on Asempa FM. “He’s also assembled a new support staff, signaling a fresh beginning.”

“We should wait and see what he has planned. We’ll stand by him through the rebuilding phase and assess his direction for the team.”

“Ghanaians will ultimately judge his performance, so it’s essential to give him the time he needs to reconstruct the team.”

Otto Addo previously guided the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they managed to secure one victory out of three group-stage matches. Despite setbacks against Portugal and Uruguay, their advancement from the group stage was hindered.

His aim now is to lead the team to victories in June of this year as they face Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
