Kofi Iddie Adam, Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, has formally confirmed Ghana’s readiness to host the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships following the signing of a key agreement in Accra.
The agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, brings together the Confederation of African Athletics, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana, sealing the country’s status as host of the continental event scheduled for May 12 to 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, attracted top officials from African athletics, led by Confederation President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum and Chief Executive Officer Lamine Fati. They were joined by a regional delegation headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa.
Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini represented the local federation, accompanied by officials from the Ghana Olympic Committee and the National Sports Authority. Other key stakeholders were also present and expressed strong confidence in Ghana’s capacity to successfully deliver the championship.
The agreement outlines the responsibilities and cooperation framework among all parties as preparations intensify toward the 2026 event, officially marking Ghana’s acceptance of the hosting mandate.
Earlier engagements saw officials from the continental body and Ghana Athletics pay courtesy visits to major sports institutions, including the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the University of Ghana Sports Directorate, as part of coordination efforts.
The championship is expected to draw top athletes from across Africa, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation as a reliable destination for hosting major international sporting events.
