Bibiani Gold Stars and Hearts of Oak played out a 1-1 draw at Dun’s Park on Sunday, a result that proved costly for the home team as they slipped to second place in the Ghana Premier League standings.
For Hearts of Oak, the draw ended their string of defeats, easing some pressure on head coach Aboubakar Ouattara. With first-choice goalkeeper Benjamin Asare away on national duty with the Black Stars in Morocco, Kwesi Nketiah stepped in and put on a composed display between the posts.
The match was not without controversy, as the referee initially awarded a penalty to Bibiani Gold Stars in the second half but later reversed the decision after consulting the fourth official. The call sparked strong protests from Gold Stars players and fans, leading to a temporary disruption that required police intervention.
Despite the setback, Gold Stars found the breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Gideon Anaba converted a penalty, seemingly securing victory for the hosts. However, their celebrations were short-lived as Stephen Appiah Asare netted a late equalizer for Hearts of Oak, ensuring the visitors returned home with a point.
With this result, Hearts of Oak remain in the top four as they prepare for a crucial clash against Nations FC, another team in the race for a top-four finish. Meanwhile, Bibiani Gold Stars, now second in the standings, will aim to return to winning ways when they take on Heart of Lions.
