Karela United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Asante Kotoko at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, avenging their earlier 4-2 defeat to the Porcupine Warriors in Kumasi and delivering a major boost to their Ghana Premier League campaign.
The decisive moment came in the 41st minute when Malik Abubakar remained composed under pressure and slotted home the opener, giving the home side the lead just before halftime. Prior to that, Karela goalkeeper Daniel Afadzwu had made a remarkable double save, denying Kotoko the chance to take an early advantage by first blocking an initial effort and then reacting instantly to stop the rebound.
The visitors’ challenge became even more complicated after Henry Ansu received a red card, reducing Kotoko to ten men and allowing Karela to dominate possession and continue pressing for a second goal. In the 65th minute, Rahman Yaya attempted to extend the lead by setting up Felix Mortu, but the striker failed to control the ball, squandering a clear scoring opportunity.
Karela United came close again in the 87th minute when substitute Sulley Kassim had a golden chance, only for Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara to produce a crucial save to keep the scoreline at 1-0. Despite late pressure, Karela held firm to claim the victory.
The win lifts Karela United to sixth place on the league table with 38 points, strengthening their position as they aim for a top-half finish. Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko drops to fifth, now seven points behind the league leaders, and will look to bounce back in their next match against Nations FC.
Karela United, riding the momentum of this important triumph, will travel to face Berekum Chelsea in their upcoming fixture, confident in their ability to continue producing strong performances on the road.
This encounter showcased Karela’s resilience, disciplined defending, and clinical finishing, highlighting the competitive nature of the Ghana Premier League, where matches can swing dramatically on key moments, including critical saves, composure under pressure, and individual errors.
