Bibiani Gold Stars secured their first home victory of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season after defeating Basake Holy Stars 2-0 at Dun’s Park on Sunday, October 11, with striker Kwame Opoku scoring both goals.
The former Asante Kotoko forward delivered a decisive performance, finding the net in each half to help the Miners claim all three points in their Week Six encounter.
Opoku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, breaking the deadlock and giving Gold Stars a valuable advantage before the half-time break.
The goal provided a timely boost for the home side, who were determined to secure their first victory at Dun’s Park this season after a difficult start to their league campaign.
Basake Holy Stars sought to respond after the restart, but Gold Stars remained organised and continued to look for opportunities to extend their lead.
Their persistence paid off in the 72nd minute when Opoku struck again to complete his brace and put the result beyond the visitors.
The second goal strengthened Gold Stars’ position and gave them breathing space as they managed the closing stages of the encounter to secure a deserved 2-0 victory.
Opoku’s double takes his tally to three league goals since joining the Bibiani-based club, highlighting his growing importance to the team’s attacking efforts.
The striker’s contribution will be particularly encouraging for head coach Petros Koukouras, whose side needed a positive result to improve their position in the standings.
The victory lifts Gold Stars out of the relegation zone and into 14th place with seven points, offering the team renewed confidence as the competition progresses.
For Basake Holy Stars, the defeat represents a setback after their victory over Berekum Chelsea last weekend. The visitors had hoped to record consecutive league wins but were unable to overcome a determined Gold Stars side.
Their search for a first victory at Dun’s Park also continues following Sunday’s defeat.
Gold Stars will now turn their attention to their next league assignment against newly promoted Debibi United, where they will aim to build on the momentum gained from their home success.
Basake Holy Stars, meanwhile, will seek an immediate response when they host Bechem United in their next fixture.
Opoku’s brace ultimately proved the difference between the two sides, giving Gold Stars a much-needed victory and renewed hope of climbing further up the league table.
