Ghana Premier League top scorers 2022-23: Abednego Tetteh finishes three clear of Hafiz Konkoni to win Golden Boot race

After struggling at Accra Hearts of Oak and experiencing relegation with King Faisal, former Bechem United striker Abednego Tetteh made a surprising move to Bibiani Gold Stars, defying all expectations to become the top scorer of the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season.

Tetteh’s remarkable rise to become the leading scorer of the recently concluded season is quite sensational, considering his setbacks at Hearts of Oak, the 2021 league champions, and his difficult time at King Faisal. Affectionately known as “Zlatatan” by the Ghanaian sporting media, Tetteh decided to give it another shot by changing his environment and joining Bibiani Gold Stars, where his goal-scoring prowess was once again evident.

The move to Gold Stars, a less pressure-filled environment, proved to be a mutually beneficial decision for both Tetteh and the club. While he remains grateful for the opportunities he had at Hearts of Oak and King Faisal, his resurgence and return to making headlines for the right reasons with coach Michael Osei’s team have brought joy back into his football career.

The former Bechem United forward concluded the current league season with an impressive tally of 18 goals, securing him the prestigious title of the league’s top scorer. He outperformed competition from Hafiz Konkoni of Bechem United, who scored 15 goals, and Sampson Eduku of Tamale City FC, who finished with 14 goals.

With this achievement, Abednego Tetteh becomes the sixth player in GPL history to win the golden boot with 18 goals, marking the fifth occurrence of such an accomplishment. Previously, Emmanuel Quarshie of Sekondi Hasaacas claimed the golden boot with 18 goals in 1980, a feat that was later jointly achieved in the 2002 season by Bernard Don Bortey and Charles Asampong Taylor, both from Accra Hearts of Oak.

In the 2005 season, Prince Tagoe of Hearts of Oak also earned the distinction of being the league’s top scorer after netting 18 goals. This feat was repeated ten years later in the 2020-2021 season by Diawusie Taylor of Karela United, who also finished with 18 goals.
