Ghana Premier League Week 11: ‘STRUGGLING’ Asante Kotoko face Nations FC

Asante Kotoko will aim to end their disappointing three-game losing streak when they take on local rivals Nations FC at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium on Sunday.

Kotoko, eager to find their footing, face a daunting challenge against a Nations FC side in excellent form and vying for the top spot in the Ghana Premier League.

Nations FC will be without standout defender Razak Simpson, who impressed during his Black Stars debut against Angola on Friday. Despite his absence, Nations remain a formidable opponent, having won their last three games with clean sheets against Nsoatreman, Karela, and Vision FC. Their defensive resilience poses a significant challenge to Kotoko’s struggling attack.

Kotoko’s recent form has been worrying, with losses to Bechem United, Hearts of Lions, and Legon Cities, extending their winless streak to four matches. Defensive lapses have plagued them, as they have failed to keep a clean sheet during this period. Their head-to-head record with Nations FC is also troubling, with Nations winning one and drawing the other in their last two meetings. The most recent clash in March 2024 saw Nations secure a narrow 1-0 victory.

In the league so far, Kotoko have managed four wins, three draws, and three losses from ten games, scoring only eight goals (0.80 per game) while conceding seven (0.70 per game). Nations FC, meanwhile, have been more consistent, with five wins, four draws, and just one loss. They’ve scored 11 goals (1.10 per game) and conceded only three (0.30 per game), making them one of the league’s most defensively sound teams.

Recent performances further highlight the contrast between the two teams. In their last six matches, Kotoko have secured two narrow 1-0 wins against Samartex and Accra Lions, alongside three defeats and a draw. Nations FC, on the other hand, have four wins, one draw, and one loss in their last six outings, including a commanding 3-0 victory over Nsoatreman and an away win at Karela.

With Asante Kotoko desperate to reverse their fortunes and Nations FC eager to maintain their momentum and push for the league’s top spot, Sunday’s encounter promises to be an intense and closely contested affair.
