The Ghana Football Association has reached an agreement with Germany for a friendly in Stuttgart in March 2026.

In total, Ghana has met Germany on 4 occasions. The Europeans have won two and drawn two.

A competitive game is expected in Stuttgart as they will use it as preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Check out the encounters.

(1). International Friendly, 1971 (Ghana 1 v 1 West Germany)

Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium on 3rd January 1971 drew 1-1 against West Germany in a game in which the Germans fielded an amateur side. Ibrahim Sunday scored Ghana’s goal, with Gunter Helgert scoring to draw the game for the visitors.

(2). International Friendly, 1991 (Germany 6-1 Ghana)

Flashback to 14th April 1993, when Germany pulverised Ghana 6-1 in an international friendly in Bochum at the Ruhrstadion. Dubbed the Bochum Disaster by the connoisseurs of the Ghanaian game. Ghana was ahead before the break thanks to Prince Opoku’s strike on the stroke of half-time (44th minute).

The Germans came in stronger and turned the shoreline within 19 minutes to score six against the Black Stars. Ulf Kirsten, in the 69th minute, scored Germany’s equaliser. Strangely, within two minutes, Ghana went down 3-1 to Stefan Effenberg and Jurgen Klinsmann’s quick goals in the 69th and 70th minutes, respectively. Steffan Effenberg extended the Germans’ lead in the 82nd minute while Klinsmann made it 5-1 in the 86th minute. Andreas Moller wrapped the fantastic 17 minutes for the Europeans by scoring the 6th goal to condemn Ghana to an embarrassing defeat.

Reports suggested that the Ghanaian players downed their tools in front of more than 35,000 fans after hearing in the dressing room that the locally based players were getting $500 while the European-based footballers would receive a whooping $1000, which was a big insult to them.

(3). 2010 FIFA World Cup (Germany 1-0 Ghana)

Ghana faced Germany in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where Mesut Ozil’s sumptuous strike in the 60th minute separated the two sides in the final game of Group D. Soccer City in Johannesburg witnessed a tough encounter where Joachim Loew’s side who have been beaten 1-0 by Serbia on matchday 2 needed a win to avoid any form mathematics and a favour from anyone.

With stars like Neuer, Philip Lahm, Sami Khedira, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Cacau, Germany promised to be a tough encounter.

Milovan Rajevic’s Ghana had won four points from their opening two games and needed at least a draw to book their slot in the knockout stage. The experience Kingson was, as usual, in the post. The young Jonathan Mensah completed the back four with the experienced Hans Adu Sarpei, John Paintsil, and John Mensah.

Anthony Anan sat in front of the defence with Gyan, Tagoe and Kevin-Prince leading the attack.

Ghana’s narrow defeat aided them to steal the second slot in the group after Serbia lost 2-1 to Australia.

(4). 2014 FIFA World Cup (Germany 2-2 Ghana)

Ghana, after losing 2-1 to the USA in Natal on matchday one, Kwesi Appiah’s men needed to avoid a defeat to remain in the competition against Germany, who had thrashed Portugal 4-0 in their first game of the group in Salvador. Ghana drew 2-2 with Mario Gotze opening the scoring for the Germans in the 54th minute. Andre Ayew, three minutes later, levelled the scores for Ghana. Gyan’s deadly finish put Ghana in front in the 63rd minute. Substitute Miroslav equalised in the 71st minute for the eventual winners of the World Cup. Ghana lost 2-1 to Portugal in the final gam,e with both teams being eliminated.
