Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee during Atalanta’s pre-season clash with Schalke 04.

The 24-year-old attacker picked up the injury during Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over the German side at the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday. Sulemana was introduced at the start of the second half, coming on in the 46th minute, but his involvement was cut short just 16 minutes later after he twisted his knee.

Despite receiving attention from the medical staff, the Ghana international was unable to continue and was subsequently withdrawn in the 62nd minute. Initial assessments have reportedly revealed a second-degree MCL tear, with the winger expected to miss between two and three months as he undergoes rehabilitation.

The injury represents a significant setback for Sulemana, who had been using Atalanta’s pre-season programme to build his fitness and regain sharpness ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. His explosive pace, direct running and ability to operate effectively on either flank had made him an important attacking option for the Italian club.

For Atalanta, the timing of the injury will be particularly frustrating as the club prepares for the start of the new competitive season. The medical team will now oversee Sulemana’s rehabilitation, with his return expected to depend on his recovery progress and response to treatment.

The setback could also have consequences for the Ghana Black Stars. With Sulemana potentially sidelined for up to 12 weeks, he is expected to miss Ghana’s upcoming September international commitments, including the anticipated 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Ivory Coast.

His absence would leave Ghana with fewer options for providing pace and width in attack, placing greater responsibility on the other wingers in the squad.

For Sulemana, the priority now will be a full and safe recovery. Having made significant efforts to prepare for the new season, the talented winger will hope to return stronger and reclaim his place in both Atalanta’s plans and the Black Stars setup.

While the injury is undoubtedly a major disappointment, a carefully managed rehabilitation programme could give Sulemana the best opportunity to make a successful return to action later in the campaign.
