Ghanaian defender Kelvin Boateng was on the scoresheet as Austria Wien were held to a 1-1 draw by city rivals SK Rapid Wien in a fiercely contested Vienna derby at the Generali Arena.
Boateng delivered a key moment in the first half, putting Austria Wien ahead in the 34th minute with a composed finish from inside the box. His goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters and gave his side a deserved advantage after a disciplined and structured opening period.
Rapid Wien controlled large spells of possession but struggled to break down Austria’s compact defensive setup, with the hosts looking dangerous on the counterattack and maintaining their shape effectively before the break.
After the restart, Austria Wien continued to manage the game well and appeared on course for a crucial derby win. However, late changes from Rapid Wien shifted the momentum in the closing stages of the encounter.
The visitors eventually found an equaliser in the 83rd minute through Ercan Kara, who finished from close range after a low delivery from Bendegúz Bolla, silencing the home crowd and denying Austria a statement victory.
Despite the disappointment of conceding late, Boateng’s performance stood out once again, highlighting his growing influence in the squad. The 26-year-old now has two goals in 14 Austrian Bundesliga appearances during the 2025/26 season.
Austria Wien will now turn their attention to a tough upcoming fixture against FC Red Bull Salzburg on Sunday, April 19, as they aim to build on their resilient derby display.
