Ghanaian defender Nathaniel Adjei has made history by becoming the most expensive transfer from the Swedish league, joining French outfit FC Lorient on a permanent deal worth €7.1 million.
The 24-year-old defender was on loan at Lorient from Hammarby IF in the Swedish Allsvenskan, with a mandatory purchase option included in the initial agreement.
Despite Hammarby’s relegation from the top-tier league, Lorient have exercised the purchase option, which was set to expire on June 15, 2024. The deal includes an initial payment of €5.1 million, with an additional €2 million in bonuses.
Adjei impressed during his loan spell at Lorient, making 15 appearances and solidifying his reputation as a versatile and talented defender.
However, an injury setback forced him to miss the final game of the season and also kept him out of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic.
The young Ghanaian defender’s transfer fee has shattered the previous record for the most expensive transfer from the Swedish league, further cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s top young defenders.
