Ghanaian midfielder Ebenezer Ofori has completed a free transfer to Kazakhstan Premier League side FC Atyrau, marking the latest chapter in a professional career that has spanned some of Europe’s top football destinations and Major League Soccer in the United States.
The 31-year-old joins the Kazakh club after a brief spell with Iraqi side Mosul SC and arrives with a wealth of experience gained across Sweden, Germany, the United States, Denmark, Lithuania, and Iraq. His move to FC Atyrau is expected to add quality, leadership, and experience to the club’s midfield as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
Born in Kumasi on July 1, 1995, Ofori began his professional career with New Edubiase United in the Ghana Premier League, where he quickly established himself as one of the country’s brightest young midfield talents. After making 17 league appearances and scoring four goals during his breakthrough season, he secured a move to Swedish giants AIK Stockholm in 2013.
His time at AIK proved to be one of the most successful periods of his career. Ofori made more than 100 competitive appearances during his first spell at the club and was named the Swedish Allsvenskan Best Midfielder in 2015 following a series of outstanding performances. His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to control the tempo of matches made him a fan favourite in Sweden.
In January 2017, the Ghanaian midfielder earned a move to German club VfB Stuttgart, where he helped the team win the 2. Bundesliga title and secure promotion to the Bundesliga. The transfer marked another major milestone in his career as he continued his development in one of Europe’s most competitive football environments.
Following his spell in Germany, Ofori joined Major League Soccer side New York City FC on loan in 2018. During his time in the United States, he featured prominently in midfield and earned praise from then-head coach Patrick Vieira, who described him as a dynamic and technically gifted player capable of dictating the tempo of games. Sporting Director Claudio Reyna also commended his game intelligence and passing ability.
The midfielder later returned to AIK for a second spell before moving to Danish side Vejle Boldklub, where he spent two seasons and accumulated valuable experience in Scandinavian football. He subsequently joined Lithuanian champions FK Žalgiris and later had a short stint in Iraq with Mosul SC before completing his latest transfer to Kazakhstan.
On the international stage, Ebenezer Ofori represented Ghana at the U-20 level before earning a call-up to the Black Stars. He made his senior international debut in 2017 and went on to make 10 appearances for Ghana, scoring one goal. He was also part of Ghana’s squad during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, further highlighting his pedigree at the highest level of African football.
Primarily a defensive midfielder, Ofori is known for his excellent positional awareness, ball-winning abilities, accurate passing, and calmness under pressure. Although naturally deployed as a holding midfielder, he has also demonstrated the versatility to operate as a central midfielder and, on occasion, at left-back during his career. His left-footedness and tactical discipline have consistently made him a valuable asset wherever he has played.
