Ghana international Caleb Ekuban delivered a stellar performance to help Genoa secure an important 2-1 away victory over Empoli in the Italian Serie A on Saturday.
Ekuban made a substitute appearance in the second half as Genoa triumphed at the Stadio Carlo Castellani – Computer Gross Arena. The first half of the highly anticipated clash ended in a goalless draw, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock.
Genoa took the lead shortly after the break in the 46th minute, with Croatian international Milan Badelj scoring. Empoli had a chance to equalize in the 54th minute when they were awarded a penalty, but Sebastiano Esposito missed the opportunity.
Ekuban, who replaced Andrea Pinamonti in the 63rd minute, sealed the win for Genoa just five minutes later. The former Trabzonspor striker found the back of the net in the 68th minute, finishing off a precise pass from Fabio Miretti to give Genoa a 2-0 lead.
Empoli responded in the 74th minute when Esposito redeemed himself by pulling one back for the home side.
Ekuban’s goal was his first of the season, having scored just once in six Serie A appearances.
Meanwhile, his compatriot Emmanuel Gyasi played the full 90 minutes for Empoli and received a yellow card in the 81st minute.
