Black Stars left-back Gideon Mensah has shared insights into his unrealized transfer to FC Barcelona five years ago, a deal that fell through due to a breach of confidentiality.
In 2019, while Mensah was with Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, the young defender was offered a potential loan move to Barcelona as a backup for Jordi Alba. However, news of the transfer leaked prematurely, breaking the confidentiality terms and ultimately causing the deal to collapse.
Reflecting on the lost opportunity, Mensah recalled his initial excitement about joining the La Liga giants. “I couldn’t resist thinking about the next flight to Spain,” he told Flashscore.
The player explained his shock when the story surfaced in Ghana. “The next day, I just saw the news everywhere that Barcelona wants me. So, I called my agent and asked him what happened to not saying anything to anyone,” Mensah said. His agent was also puzzled, admitting he didn’t know how the information got out.
Now 25, Mensah currently plays in France for AJ Auxerre and has nearly 30 caps for Ghana’s Black Stars.
