GFA Executive Council Member Gifty Oware-Mensah is set to make history as the Association’s first female Second Vice President following the approval of a landmark proposal at the 31st Ordinary Congress in Prampram.
The proposal, aimed at strengthening gender representation in football governance, was endorsed by FIFA and elevates the Women’s Representative on the GFA Executive Council to the position of Second Vice President — the third-highest office in the Association.
This move aligns with FIFA’s directive that all confederations must have at least one woman in an executive leadership role and is seen as a major step toward inclusivity and equity in football administration. Advocates believe the role will amplify advocacy for the women’s game in Ghana, boosting resources, grassroots programs, and elite competition.
Speaking after the Congress, where 114 of 124 members also voted to extend the GFA presidential term limit from two to three terms, Gifty expressed gratitude to colleagues who supported the proposal. She was overheard telling one member, “Thank you for making me vice,” underscoring her readiness for the position.
While her appointment will be officially confirmed during the GFA elections in 2027, Gifty will continue to serve as an Executive Council Member in the interim. The Congress gathered 124 members to deliberate and make key decisions shaping the future of Ghanaian football.
